Asbestos, which is the main cause of mesothelioma, was discovered in the early 20th century. There were many articles written in the 1930's that indicated that asbestos was linked to cancer. The very first to be written suggested that asbestos was the primary cause of lung cancer. That publication was called "Pulmonary Asbestosis."

During 1955 a connection was established between the development of certain forms of lung cancer and the ingestion of asbestos fibers, which confirmed this theory.

This caused many problems with the people in the community until 1978, when the Australian Government phased out the town completely. The asbestos exposure was so great, that shutting down the mine just wasn't enough. The town had been exposed to this deadly substance for so long, that the entire town has to be closed and condemned!
